Message for World Day of the Poor

The VI World Day of the Poor is celebrated on November 13, 2022. The Pope's message for this Day is titled: "For you Christ became poor" (see 2 Cor 8:9), 5 pages long with more than 3,000 words divided into 10 paragraphs, and signed by the Pope on June 13, 2022.

At the beginning of the Message, the Holy Father commented that "This year's World Day of the Poor serves as a healthy challenge to help us reflect on our lifestyle and on the many forms of poverty of the present time."

War creates poverty

He noted the pandemic pandemic that the world had just emerged from with many losses and another disaster, the war in Ukraine, leading to the intervention of superpowers, repeating the tragedy of "a few powerful people suffocating the voice of a humanity calling for peace." The Pope emphasized: "How great is the poverty - that the senselessness of war creates -!".

Christ became poor so that we could become rich

On the occasion of the World Day of the Poor, the Holy Father invites us to reflect on Saint Paul's call to fix our gaze on Jesus, who was rich and wealthy, but voluntarily became poor for you, so that through his poverty you may become rich" (see 2 Cor 8:9).

Solidarity: sharing a little of what we have with those who have nothing

In his Message for the World Day of the Poor, the Pope recalled the collection of donations to support the needs of the poor, which Christians always do joyfully and responsibly. He thanked the generosity of peoples in welcoming millions of refugees from war in the Middle East, Central Africa and now Ukraine. He emphasized solidarity: sharing a little of what we have with those who have nothing, so that no one has absolutely nothing.

Sign of love

For Saint Paul, sharing is a sign of love, the love that Christ himself showed. Therefore, the Holy Father invites us to roll up our sleeves and turn faith into action, which we need to do ourselves. And Saint Charles de Foucauld is the model when, born into a noble family, he gave up everything to follow Jesus, becoming like him, a poor brother to all. (CSR_2487_2022)
